CM directs Health dept to immprove performance of Nutrition program, lady workers’ capacity
KARACHI (March 1) : The Sindh Health Department has functionalized 170 closed dispensaries in Tharparkar where 557 trained and unskilled employees have been posted for the larger interest of poor people living on the desert.
This was disclosed by Minister Health Jam Mehtab Dahar while briefing Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah here at the CM House today. The meeting was attended by Secretary Health Saeed Mangnijo and others.
Health Minister Jam Mehtab said that he had personally visited far flung areas of Thar and found that 170 dispensaries were not functional. Their building were abandoned. “On your {CM} directives all the buildings of dispensaries were repaired and made functional by providing necessary equipments and staff. The salaries of the technical and non-technical staff members have not been released so far, he complained. On this the chief minister directed teh chief secretary to release their salaries as soon as possible.
Replying to a question of the chief minister, Secretary Health Saeed Mangnijo said that the budget of medicine which was increased by the chief minister from Rs20 million to Rs60.5 million have been released. “All the newly operationalized dispensaries have also been provided medicines,” he said.
The minister said that he had selected some 167 local Thari girls who were either matriculate or immediate and gave them a 3-day training course of midwife. The local `daies’ (untrained) have also been given training of conducting safe and secure deliveries. They have also been told that chloral Hexidin ointment for applying it just after cutting the umbilical cord. “The infection due unhygienic cutting of umbilical cord becomes one the main cause of death of newborns.
The other cause of death of new born babies in Thar is asphyxia among, a respiratory problem develops among the new born babies when their mother experience prolong labour pains. The Daies (untrained nurses) have also been provided Ambo bags through which respiration can be restored in the asphyxia cases. These bags are operated manually and are easy to operate.
The minister health said that a Rs4 billion Nutrition Programme was going on in eight districts of the province, including Thar. On this the chief minister said that he was not satisfied with the programme. The performance of the programme is deplorable, he said.
He also said that the programme of Lady Health Workers has also failed to produce proper results. “I am also not satisfied with its performance,” he said and added that 22,000 LHW were working in Sindh. There is a dire need to build their capacity and use their services in the larger interest of women living in rural areas particularly in primary health sector.
The chief minister directed the health minister to take drastic measure to improve both the programmes both the programmes, LHW and nutrition programme .
The chief minister also directed the health minister to send him a summary for appointment of 1000 doctors so that they could be posted in Thar and other areas where their services are required. “I want these recruitments of merit and on emergency basis,” he said
