Central Coordinator PPP Human Rights Cell MNA Dr Nafisa Shah expressed deep sorrow over loss of 46 precious human lives in Lahore
Islamabad, November 7, 2015: PPP Human Rights Cell Central Coordinator Dr Nafisa Shah has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of more than 46 precious lives in the Sundar factory incident in Lahore and has expressed concern at the frequency of such incidents recently.
“This incident, reveals many failings on part of our federal and provincial governments. First that the industry and industrialists have all the power and the perks to exploit the labour without any checks by the government. Second, it shows that the announcement of minimum wage by the government is nothing but a farce as the labourers there were paid a paltry 200 Rs a day. Third that there are no inspections worth the name by the labour departments in the provinces. And fourth there are no health and safety measures of any kind at work in the industry.”
Adding that this state of affairs is carrying on through out the country, the Coordinator called upon federal and provincial governments to ensure health and safety standards for the industry and insure protection of labour rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan.
