Calls for reforming justice system

Islamabad October 30, 2015: Former President Asif Ali Zardari has felicitated Barrister Syed Ali Zafar on his election as SCBA President calling also for reforms in the justice system.

In a message Zardari said that lawyers as members of the larger legal fraternity had played a key role in upholding the rule of law and constitutionalism and orderly, peaceful and democratic elections in this highest elected body of the lawyers was an encouraging omen for the democratic processes in the country.

Zardari expressed the hope that the lawyers will continue to play their important role not only in upholding rule of law and constitutionalism but also in reforming the justice system in the country.

It is important that top priority is accorded to reforming the criminal justice system in the country and the lawyers’ community is best placed to raise their powerful voice in its support, he said.

Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar quoted the former President as saying that continued neglect of reforms will only increase people’s alienation from the institutions responsible for dispensing justice and eventually from the state itself.

The former President also welcomed the recent decision of the Senate to convert itself in to a Committee of the Whole to debate the issue and play a role in providing speedy and inexpensive justice to the people. The newly elected SCBA together with the Senate Committee of the Whole has an opportunity to lead upfront the struggle for judicial reforms.

Zardari also asked the newly elected President SCBA to convey his greetings and felicitaions to other elected office bearers of the Association on their election.
